Living independently means developing the life skills which enable you to have varying levels of independence and starting to take responsibility for yourself. Life skills can be taken in steps which may include: planning shopping trips, helping and learning to maintain a home, managing personal hygiene, washing clothes, making a bed, cooking and eating healthily, journey planning, travelling alone safely or arranging a trip, managing your own finances and understanding benefits, managing friends and relationships, understanding your rights and entitlements, finding practical help and support when you need it – this might involve using specialist equipment, finding accommodation that is separate from your family. Understanding where you are in this process through an "independence scale".
