Redemption Roasters is a specialty coffee company with a difference. In addition to roasting our coffee within the confines of HMP Mount, we also run barista training programmes both in prison and the community.
Our community based training is aimed at individuals either with a history of involvement in the criminal justice system or those potentially "at risk" of entering the criminal justice system. The latter is a broad definition and in the past we have worked with young people facing long term unemployment, individuals experiencing homeless and individuals battling substance misuse difficulties. The hope is that we can break down barriers to the specialty coffee industry and help individuals into employment who may otherwise struggle to do so.
The initial training programme is 1-week in duration and is delivered at our specialist training space in Kings Cross. Over the course of the week the learners will work through a syllabus covering the basics in coffee extraction, milk technique and customer service/food hygiene. At the end of the week each learner is assessed and given a pass mark.
Once the learner has passed the course they then become "graduates" and will have access to one of our Employment Coaches who look to support the graduates into interviews with the aim of securing meaningful employment within the hospitality and coffee industry, either within our own network of coffee shops across London or with an external employer. Alongside employment support we also provide holistic support to each of our graduates and in the past have supported graduates in tackling issues with housing, financial hardship and signposting to wellbeing support services.
