Old Vic for young people

The Old Vic is a gateway to a world of creative, social and employment opportunities in the theatre.

World renowned, The Old Vic today leads the way for the next generation of theatre-goers and theatre-makers as it has done for almost 200 years. Whether your interest is in theatre on or off stage, in broadening your creative imagination, or simply learning how to communicate better in an interview, this is where futures begin.

The Old Vic’s flagship schools’ programmes, Take the Lead and Schools Club are now open!

Take the Lead is free employability programme for students in years 11–13 that uses theatre techniques and creative workshops to build on five core employability skills: communication, self-management, self-belief, teamwork and problem-solving.
Take the Lead includes five main engagements for selected schools:
• A launch event where students will hear from exciting guest speakers giving insights into a range of different industries and career journeys
• A visit to a production at The Old Vic
• A two hour in-school workshop using rehearsal room techniques focusing on physical and vocal skills
• A two hour in-school workshop on working together to create a pitch
• A two and a half hour workshop at an Old Vic partner venue on how to apply the skills developed on the programme to prepare for the working world
• Opportunity to attend a week of work experience at The Old Vic
Schools Club
In 2024/25, The Old Vic will partner with 40 state secondary schools across London, engaging up to 30 students in each school for the full academic year. This programme is designed to encourage the next generation of theatre-makers through providing young people in Year 9 – Year 13 with an introduction to a broad range of non-performing roles. Schools Club supports the curriculum and works with schools and students from areas of London with poor arts provision, inspiring students to pursue a career in the arts.

12 Choirs of Christmas supports mental health and wellbeing by partnering community groups for people aged 50+ with primary schools across London to create 12 intergenerational choirs. Each choir will be supported by a musical director and have three rehearsals before they perform their Christmas concert in the auditorium at The Old Vic.

If you are part of a community group for people aged 50+ in London, we would love for you to apply. You don't have to be an existing choir, just a class or group that likes to sing.

Applications are now open and will close at 5pm on Mon 17 Jun 2024. Please email ovcommunity@oldvictheatre.com if you have any questions or want to know more about the project.

PARTNER SCHOOLS RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING:

• Four in-schools workshops, each covering a different theatre discipline such as lighting design, sound design, set design, costume design, directing and playwriting
• Tickets to watch four Old Vic productions throughout the academic year
• The opportunity to apply for Work Experience at The Old Vic
• Four teacher CPD workshops led by industry professionals

Both programmes are free to participate in, and are available to all state-schools, SEND groups, colleges and PRUs within the M25.
